What makes Lot a good place for reports — and for mistakes
Lot is a rural, dark-sky department, and that matters. The “Triangle Noir du Quercy”, in and around the Causses du Quercy, is promoted locally as one of France’s best areas for observing the night sky, with low light pollution and organised observation sites. That is wonderful for astronomy, but it also means residents and visitors may notice more satellites, bright planets, meteors, aircraft lights and atmospheric effects than people living under urban glare.[Tourisme Lot]tourisme-lot.comTourisme Lot Le triangle noir du Quercy: un lieu idéal pour observer lesTourisme Lot Le triangle noir du Quercy: un lieu idéal pour observer les
This does not mean witnesses are careless. It means the local environment is unusually good at producing memorable sky observations. A bright meteor can briefly illuminate the landscape; a low star can flash colours through turbulence; a satellite can look purposeful when seen in a dark, still sky; and a small aircraft or ultralight can appear strange if sound, distance and angle are misjudged. Lot’s published cases repeatedly show this gap between what a witness understandably experiences and what later investigation can support.
The 1954 Figeac case: strange, early, and weakly supported
The oldest notable Lot case in GEIPAN’s public record is Figeac, dated 27 September 1954. According to the official summary, three children on their way to school reported encountering a small person and seeing a kind of “flying box” near a field. The schoolteacher alerted the gendarmerie, and the children were heard the next morning. GEIPAN’s later classification is C: not identified, but mainly because the information is insufficient, contradictory and not corroborated. No ground trace was found, and no independent witness was gathered.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
That makes Figeac interesting historically, not evidentially strong. It sits in the broader French 1954 wave, a year often discussed by UFO historians because of the large number of press and witness reports across France. Within Lot, however, the official file is a warning against over-reading a colourful story. The witnesses were young children, key details differed, and the investigation did not produce physical confirmation or adult corroboration. The most balanced reading is that Figeac belongs in Lot’s folklore of aerial mystery, but not among the department’s strongest unresolved cases.
The 1985 reports: how dramatic lights became meteors and aircraft
Two 1985 Lot entries are especially useful because they show how cases can change when old files are revisited. On 24 January 1985, witnesses around Saint-Germain-du-Bel-Air and Saint-Chamarand reported flashes, a pale oval object, a halo and later detonations. GEIPAN notes that the case had previously been classified as D, but was re-examined and reclassified as A: a very probable meteoroid atmospheric entry. The reasons are straightforward: intense light, an elongated glow, delayed booms, multiple witnesses over a wider area, and the known way sound from high-altitude meteoroid events can arrive minutes after the light.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
The 5 October 1985 Cahors case is different but equally instructive. A motorist and passengers saw a large luminous triangular form with green and red flashing lights, apparently moving slowly and silently. GEIPAN’s investigation found that Cessna 150 training flights had taken place in the same sector, with the pilot using cockpit lighting and landing lights during instruction. The case is classified B: a probable aircraft observation.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
Together, these two cases are a good miniature of Lot’s UFO record. One looked like an uncanny atmospheric event but matched a meteoroid pattern; the other looked like a structured object but had a plausible aviation explanation. Neither requires dismissing the witnesses. Both show why timing, direction, nearby aviation activity and later technical review matter more than first impressions.
Cahors in 2000: the “disc with legs” that was an ultralight
The most memorable explained case in the department is Cahors, 11 November 2000. A witness reported a fast, low, silent disc-like craft with three legs. A gendarme made a similar observation but noted engine noise. The gendarmerie investigation established that the object was a prototype ultralight aircraft being tested for filming birds, connected with the film Winged Migration. GEIPAN classifies the case A: identified as an aircraft.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
This case matters because it has several ingredients that usually make UFO reports feel persuasive: an unusual shape, low altitude, apparent silence for at least one witness, and a law-enforcement observer. Yet the explanation was not a vague “probably a plane”; it was a specific local test of an unusual craft. It is one of the clearest examples in Lot of a sighting that became less mysterious as investigators obtained context.
The 2008–2010 cluster: lanterns, atmospheric entries and thin files
A modest cluster of Lot-related reports appears in the late 2000s and 2010. The 25 January 2008 regional case, including a Mayrinhac-Lentour witness, involved many observers across south-west France seeing a luminous object around 18:15. GEIPAN gathered more than 170 testimonies and favoured the entry of a bolide, a bright meteor, rather than a space-debris re-entry. Several people reportedly brought stones forward afterwards, but no meteorite debris was confirmed.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
Other reports from the period are less robust. Lavergne, 1 May 2008, is classified C, with high strangeness but low consistency; the file concerns an alleged low “pyramidal” object, but GEIPAN’s public data indicate a lack of reliable information. Thémines, 26 November 2009, and Le Montat, 6 June 2010, are also listed as C cases because of insufficient reliable information.[GEIPAN+2Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
Camboulit, 28 July 2010, shows a more familiar modern pattern: a report GEIPAN lists as B and attributes probably to Thai lanterns. The period around 2008–2010 saw many French cases involving lanterns, bright planets, satellites and other common misidentifications; Lot’s small cluster fits that national background rather than standing out as a unique local flap.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
Recent Lot cases: stars, satellites and meteors
The more recent public files are useful because they show how modern tools make some cases easier to solve. At Biars-sur-Cère, GEIPAN examined repeated observations from 2014 to 2015 of coloured luminous spheres seen through binoculars or a telescope. The agency classified the case B, saying the likely explanation was particularly scintillating low-elevation stars, possibly Capella, Vega or Deneb, with an optical setup also potentially affecting the appearance.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
At Espédaillac, a 21 January 2017 nocturnal point of light is classified A as astronomical. At Durbans, 30 August 2019, GEIPAN lists the phenomenon as a satellite. At Lavercantière, 19 April 2023, a very brief early-morning observation of a bright point with a fluorescent green trail and an apparent terminal “explosion” is classified B: probably a meteor entering the atmosphere.[Geipan+2GEIPAN]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
These cases are not dull simply because they are explained. They are exactly the sort of reports that keep official investigators busy: sincere witnesses, brief windows of observation, limited or absent imagery, and phenomena that can look odd when seen in a dark rural sky. The difference from older cases is that investigators now have better access to astronomical software, satellite data, meteor networks and digital image analysis.
The 2020 Cahors report and the limits of press accounts
In April 2020, local press reported witness accounts of a mysterious oval object over Cahors during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Witnesses described an object that rose rapidly, without a trail or sound, and rejected obvious explanations such as Venus, the International Space Station or a shooting star.[ladepeche.fr]ladepeche.frUn mystérieux ovni aperçu dans le ciel de Cahors, desUn mystérieux ovni aperçu dans le ciel de Cahors, des
As a press story, it is interesting: multiple witnesses, a clear location, and a vivid description. As evidence, it remains limited unless it is matched to a formal GEIPAN file, precise times, direction, duration, photographs, video metadata or independent technical checks. Lockdown also meant more people were spending time at windows and noticing the sky, while the spring sky over Lot was unusually visible to observers. The responsible conclusion is that the Cahors 2020 account is part of the department’s living UFO culture, but it should not be treated as a landmark unresolved case without a stronger public investigation trail.
How GEIPAN classifications should be read in Lot
GEIPAN’s categories are central to reading Lot’s record properly. A means identified; B means probably identified; C means not identified because the data are too weak; D means still unexplained after investigation. Nationally, GEIPAN’s dynamic statistics show that identified and probably identified cases form the majority of published classified files, while D cases are a small minority.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frGEIPANStatistiques | GEIPANGEIPANStatistiques | GEIPAN
That distinction is crucial for Lot. A C case is not a stronger mystery than a B case. It often means the opposite: there was not enough reliable information to test explanations properly. Figeac 1954 and Lavergne 2008 may sound more dramatic than a satellite or meteor case, but GEIPAN’s C classification tells the reader not to build a strong claim on them. By contrast, the Cahors 2000 ultralight case is evidentially stronger as an investigation, even though it is no longer mysterious.
Independent mapping based on public GEIPAN data lists 14 Lot cases and no class D cases for the department. That count should be treated as a useful guide rather than a substitute for GEIPAN’s own files, but it matches the broad pattern visible in the official case pages: Lot has reports, but not a public flagship case that remains unexplained after a strong investigation.[CarteOvni.fr]carteovni.frOpen source on carteovni.fr.
What Lot’s UFO history really shows
Lot’s best-documented UFO history is not about a hidden local secret. It is about how a rural, dark-sky department produces memorable sightings that are then filtered through official records, gendarmerie notes, witness testimony, astronomy, aviation checks and later reclassification. Meteors and atmospheric entries recur. Aircraft and unusual ultralights matter. Stars, satellites and lanterns explain several modern reports. Poorly documented cases remain interesting but weak.
For a reader trying to understand the department, the strongest pattern is this: Lot is a good place to see the sky, and therefore a good place to misread the sky. Its UFO record is still worth studying because it shows the full life cycle of a report — surprise, testimony, press interest, official classification, and sometimes a later downgrade from mystery to explanation. The result is not a debunking of every witness experience, but a reminder that the most durable UFO history is often built from careful distinctions: unresolved is not the same as unexplained after investigation, and strange at first sight is not the same as strong evidence.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to What Really Happened in Lot's UFO Files?.
