Introduction
What The Gendarmes Reported
The official GEIPAN case file is listed as “Lisieux (14) 04.08.1991”, with the observation date given as 5 August 1991 in Calvados. The apparent mismatch in the title reflects the night of 4 to 5 August: the patrol was under way after midnight, around 2.20 am. GEIPAN’s published summary says two gendarmes on patrol saw a red sphere about 80 centimetres in diameter, moving very quickly and without noise at roughly 15 metres above the ground. The event was very brief, the two statements were concordant, and the phenomenon could not be identified.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
The gendarmerie report adds useful local texture. The patrol vehicle was travelling from Moyaux towards Lisieux on the road then described as CD 510, outside the built-up area and around kilometre point 7. The light was described as “vermilion red”, spherical, and moving from south-west to north-east. It reportedly crossed the road axis perpendicularly, followed a straight and horizontal path, showed no visible variation, and produced no sound. The report also states that the sky was completely clear, visibility was excellent and there was no wind.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
The two individual witness statements are important because they show both agreement and subtle difference. One gendarme described a single very red spherical light, with no wake or trail, moving horizontally and rectilinearly at an estimated 15 metres above the ground. The other compared the size to a road sign of the “no entry” type and estimated the altitude at 10 to 15 metres. Both said the movement was rapid, the weather was clear, and nothing more could be added.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
The location also matters. Hermival-les-Vaux is a small commune in Calvados, in the Lisieux arrondissement, and the commune’s own site places it about 5 kilometres north-east of Lisieux. That rural edge-of-town setting makes the report more plausible as a quick patrol observation in open road conditions, but it also means there were few obvious independent observers to confirm the event.[Insee]insee.fr14326 hermival les vaux14326 hermival les vaux
Why GEIPAN Left It Unresolved
GEIPAN classifies the Lisieux case as “C”, with the phenomenon type given as a lack of reliable information. This is not the same as saying that a well-documented object remained unexplained after deep investigation. In GEIPAN’s system, “A” means identified, “B” means probably identified, “C” means not identified because of lack of data or information, and “D” means not identified after investigation.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
That distinction is essential. GEIPAN explains that its classifications depend on two broad ideas: residual strangeness after testing possible explanations, and “consistency”, meaning the amount and reliability of the information available. A case can therefore remain unidentified partly because the report is too sparse to test. GEIPAN’s method asks not only “is this strange?” but also “is there enough dependable information to make a serious judgement?”[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frmethodologie classification geipanmethodologie classification geipan
What Makes The Case Worth Keeping
The case still matters within Calvados because it has qualities that many weaker UFO anecdotes lack. It was not only a rumour; it entered an official gendarmerie process, was transmitted in a formal file, and remains available through GEIPAN’s public archive. France’s official system is unusual because CNES has maintained a dedicated UAP study and information body since 1977, with partners including the gendarmerie, police, the Air and Space Force, CNRS and Météo-France.[CNES]cnes.frOpen source on cnes.fr.
The witnesses also have a certain evidential value. Gendarmes on patrol are not automatically immune to mistakes, but they are accustomed to observation, reporting and formal statements. The two accounts agree on the main points: a single red light, low apparent altitude, very rapid motion, a south-west to north-east path, no noise, no visible trail and clear weather. This makes the report more disciplined than a casual later retelling.[Geipan+2Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
It is also distinctive in the Calvados record because many other GEIPAN-listed cases in the department have probable or identified explanations. The department’s case list includes examples classified as lanterns, debris, a drone, a condensation trail, a sky-tracer and atmospheric re-entry, alongside older cases marked as identified or probably identified. Against that background, Lisieux stands out not as proof of something extraordinary, but as one of the cleaner small unresolved files in the local archive.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
The most useful way to preserve the case, then, is not to embellish it. Its value lies in showing how a modest, officially recorded sighting can remain open while still being weak. For a department-level UFO history of Calvados, Lisieux is a reminder that “unidentified” can mean “not enough to decide”, not “confirmed exotic craft”.
What The Evidence Cannot Prove
The main weakness is duration. GEIPAN itself says the phenomenon lasted only a very short time. A brief glimpse gives witnesses little opportunity to judge distance, size, speed or altitude accurately, especially at night. The reported 80-centimetre size and 10 to 15 metre altitude are therefore not measurements; they are witness estimates based on a fast visual impression.[Geipan+2Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
The second weakness is the absence of independent checks. No separate witness group is cited, no local press follow-up is evident in the official file, and no technical record is attached that could anchor the reported path. Without triangulation, a light that seems low and nearby may in some cases be farther away and larger, or higher and faster, than it appears. This does not mean the gendarmes were wrong to report what they saw; it means the report cannot carry the weight that later UFO retellings sometimes place on it.
The third weakness is the lack of diagnostic detail. A red, fast, silent light can fit several broad families of explanation, but the file does not contain enough detail to choose confidently among them. A meteor or fireball can be bright, brief and fast, and meteor organisations warn that even trained observers can be so struck by a fireball that useful data remain uncertain. But the reported low, horizontal, road-crossing motion and absence of a trail do not make a meteor explanation straightforward.[International Meteor Organization]imo.netOpen source on imo.net.
Other possibilities remain similarly underdetermined. A nearby human-made light, flare-like object, model device, optical misperception, small airborne object or distant luminous event could each explain some features while failing on others. The report’s silence is interesting, but not decisive: a silent observation can indicate a nearby quiet object, a distant object, wind conditions, vehicle noise masking sound, or a phenomenon that would not produce audible sound at the witnesses’ location. The file simply does not give enough evidence to sort these alternatives reliably.
The Best Reading Of The Lisieux Case
The fairest verdict is that the Lisieux red sphere was a real report by credible witnesses, not a strong evidential case for an extraordinary object. Its best evidence is the formal gendarmerie documentation and the close agreement between the two witness statements. Its central problem is that almost everything important depends on a few seconds of unaided human perception.
That makes the case more interesting than many local UFO anecdotes, but less compelling than a multi-witness, multi-instrument or long-duration incident. It belongs in Calvados’ UFO history because it is one of the department’s clearest unresolved GEIPAN entries, not because it proves anything dramatic. The official “C” classification captures the balance well: the phenomenon was not identified, but mainly because the available information is too thin to support a firmer conclusion.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
For readers following Calvados case by case, Lisieux is therefore a useful benchmark. It shows how an official archive can preserve a puzzling observation without turning it into certainty. It also shows why later summaries should resist exaggeration. The strongest statement supported by the record is modest: near Lisieux, in August 1991, two gendarmes saw a fast, silent red spherical light; GEIPAN could not identify it; and the evidence remains too brief and incomplete to say much more.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to Why The Lisieux Red Sphere Still Matters.
