Introduction

The Martigues 1998 and La Fare-les-Oliviers 2001 files matter because they are the two Bouches-du-Rhône cases in the public GEIPAN record that still sit in category D: not identified after investigation. That does not mean they prove an extraordinary craft. It means the official French UFO office did not find a satisfactory conventional explanation from the information available. Martigues is a short night-time account of a yellowish round light near a hillside, first slow and then extremely fast. La Fare-les-Oliviers is a daylight or early-evening account of a vertical metallic-looking cylinder, reportedly filmed while the witness followed it by motorbike. Both cases are interesting precisely because they are modest: single-witness reports, limited public documentation, no dramatic official conclusion, but enough strangeness and consistency for GEIPAN not to file them as simple misidentifications or unusable reports.[Geipan+3Geipan+3Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.Overview image for Unresolved Cases

Why these two files stand out in Bouches-du-Rhône

Bouches-du-Rhône has many GEIPAN entries, but the department’s public record is mostly made up of explained, probably explained, or weakly documented cases. Recent local examples in the same department include reports attributed to a star, a child’s balloon, a bird, an LED balloon, pollen or seed, sky-trackers and the International Space Station. Against that background, Martigues and La Fare-les-Oliviers stand out not because they are spectacularly well proven, but because they are the rare cases in the department where the official classification remains D.[Geipan+2Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.

That distinction needs careful reading. GEIPAN, the French group within CNES that collects, analyses, archives and publishes reports of unidentified aerospace phenomena, says its role is to investigate reports and look for scientific explanations, not to confirm alien craft or promote the popular UFO mythology. CNES describes GEIPAN’s mission as collecting, analysing and archiving witness reports while informing the public; it also lists partners or associated bodies such as the gendarmerie, police, air force, CNRS and Météo-France.[CNES]cnes.frGEIPAN | CNESGEIPAN | CNES

The wider statistics also keep the two Bouches-du-Rhône cases in proportion. GEIPAN’s dynamic statistics, dated 25 June 2026, list 3,368 published classified cases, of which 106 — 3.1% — are category D, meaning unidentified after investigation. Category C is different: it means the phenomenon is not identified because of missing or unreliable data, not because it remained unexplained after a workable investigation.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frGeipan Statistics | GEIPANGeipan Statistics | GEIPANUnresolved Cases illustration 1

What witnesses reported in 1998 and 2001

Martigues, 27 September 1998

The Martigues case is short but vivid. GEIPAN records that at about 3 am on 27 September 1998, a 70-year-old female witness observed a round, luminous, yellowish object in the sky. It was described as being near a hillside, moving very slowly, before leaving at very high speed after roughly five minutes and disappearing. The public case summary says no explanation was given for the phenomenon.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

La Fare-les-Oliviers, 24 June 2001

The La Fare-les-Oliviers case is more detailed and, on paper, more physically specific. GEIPAN records that on 24 June 2001, at about 7 pm, a witness observed a bright vertical cylindrical object moving slowly. The witness reportedly filmed the phenomenon and followed it by motorbike to see it better as it moved. The object’s estimated altitude was 600 metres, its estimated dimensions were 15 metres high by 2.5 metres in diameter, and it was described as aluminium-coloured with bright points like headlights. Its speed was estimated at about 10 km/h. GEIPAN says the investigation did not identify the observation.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The witness-detail page adds that the witness was a 40-year-old man and that his reaction was recorded as curiosity, interest and active engagement. The observation window is given as 19:00 to 19:30, the frame of reference as the sky, the environment as urbanised land including industrial or commercial zones and road or railway networks, and the direction of horizontal observation as 315 degrees. The phenomenon is listed as one object, with a cylindrical three-dimensional form and one axis of symmetry. As in Martigues, noise and environmental effects are unknown or not specified.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

La Fare-les-Oliviers is the more interesting of the two if a reader is asking about “evidence” in the practical sense. It has a longer time window, a claimed moving pursuit, estimated size and altitude, and a reported film. Yet the public GEIPAN page does not, in the available text, provide the film itself, a frame analysis, a triangulation, a radar correlation, a meteorological balloon check, or a detailed explanation of why competing hypotheses failed. The case is therefore stronger than a vague memory, but weaker than a multi-sensor aviation incident.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.Unresolved Cases illustration 2

How GEIPAN classed the cases as D

GEIPAN’s classification system is built around two ideas: residual strangeness after investigation, and consistency. Strangeness means how far the report remains from known explanations once hypotheses have been tested; consistency depends on the amount and reliability of the gathered information, including witness number, precision, coherence, links between witnesses and the presence or absence of photographs or video.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

In GEIPAN’s current framework, category A means the phenomenon is identified; B means a proposed explanation is very probable; C means the case is not workable because of missing or unreliable data; and D means the phenomenon is not identified after investigation. GEIPAN has also used D1 and D2 as subdivisions of D, with D1 generally covering strange cases of medium consistency and D2 covering very strange cases with stronger consistency, such as multiple independent witnesses, photo or video records, or ground traces.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

What the evidence can and cannot prove

The strongest point in favour of treating the two cases seriously is not that either report is spectacular. It is that GEIPAN did not dismiss them as obvious aircraft, stars, balloons, satellites, meteors or insufficiently documented cases. Martigues had a defined time, duration, form, colour and motion pattern; La Fare-les-Oliviers had a more extended observation, a specific cylindrical description, estimated dimensions, a direction, an active witness response and reportedly a film. Those features give investigators more to work with than a fleeting anonymous light.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The weaknesses are just as important. Both public files rest on one witness. Martigues has no published image or video, no stated distance, no confirmed sound, no environmental effects and no independent corroboration in the public entry. La Fare-les-Oliviers is richer, but the publicly accessible GEIPAN text does not show a technical video analysis, independent witness confirmation, radar data, recovered object, trace evidence or official elimination table. A reported film is potentially valuable evidence, but without the image sequence, metadata, optical analysis and context, a reader cannot independently judge whether it shows a structured object, a balloon-like object, a visual misperception or something else.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The plausible conventional possibilities also differ. Martigues was a night-time hillside light, so ordinary candidates a sceptical review would need to consider include a distant aircraft seen at an unusual angle, a ground light on or near a slope, a bright astronomical object misread through local reference points, or a perceptual effect in judging distance and speed. La Fare’s slow metallic cylinder invites different checks: balloon, advertising object, industrial object, airborne debris, aircraft seen end-on or a lightweight object carried by wind. GEIPAN’s D label means no such hypothesis was accepted as satisfactory in the official file; it does not mean those possibilities can be ignored by later readers.[Geipan+2Geipan]cnes-geipan.frGeipan La méthodologie de classification au GEIPAN | GEIPANGeipan La méthodologie de classification au GEIPAN | GEIPAN

This is the central lesson of the two cases. “Unresolved” is a disciplined word when used carefully. It means the available evidence resisted a confident explanation under GEIPAN’s classification method. It does not transfer the burden of proof onto the most exotic claim. In Bouches-du-Rhône, Martigues and La Fare-les-Oliviers should be read as official unresolved cases with limited but non-trivial witness evidence, not as proof of alien technology, secret aircraft or a hidden local flap.[Geipan+2Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.Unresolved Cases illustration 3

How later reporting changes the picture

Later republication has mostly clarified rather than transformed the cases. GEIPAN’s current public pages preserve the D classification and provide structured witness fields, which helps readers separate basic case facts from speculation. Independent mapping sites using GEIPAN’s open public data also list both cases as Bouches-du-Rhône category D reports, and they place Martigues within a local set of six recorded Martigues cases, only one of which is D, while La Fare-les-Oliviers is listed as having one recorded GEIPAN case, also D.[CarteOvni.fr]carteovni.frOpen source on carteovni.fr.

The fairest reading of the Martigues and La Fare evidence

The fairest reading is that Martigues is an unresolved night observation with moderate evidential weight, while La Fare-les-Oliviers is an unresolved slow-object case with somewhat richer descriptive evidence but still limited public verification. Martigues depends mainly on the credibility and precision of one witness’s short account. La Fare adds a longer viewing period, estimated physical dimensions and a reported film, but the absence of a public technical breakdown prevents the case from becoming a robust proof case.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Within the Bouches-du-Rhône UFO record, their importance is comparative. Many local reports can be filed as aircraft, balloons, astronomical objects, satellites, birds, pollen, sky-trackers or insufficiently reliable testimony. These two were not. They survive as reminders that an official unexplained label is neither a trophy nor a dismissal. It is a marker for cases where the report was interesting enough to resist available explanation, but not strong enough to settle the bigger question of what was actually in the sky.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to Why Two Local UFO Cases Still Stand Out.
