Introduction

GEIPAN’s Nord files show a more useful story than a simple list of “mysteries”. Most official cases in the department are not treated as proof of exotic craft, but as exercises in separating a puzzling witness experience from what can actually be checked. In Nord, that line runs through several kinds of evidence: strong but still unresolved reports such as Lille 1997 and Douai 2022; probable explanations such as lanterns, advertising lights, aircraft and balloons; and weak files where there is simply not enough reliable information to decide. GEIPAN, the French space agency’s official UAP unit, says most sightings are explained, while the small unresolved residue depends on both “strangeness” and the strength of the evidence behind the testimony.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frGEIPANMission & Geipan | GEIPANGEIPANMission & Geipan | GEIPANOverview image for GEIPAN Files

How GEIPAN classifies Nord reports

The first thing to understand is that “unexplained” is not one category. GEIPAN’s system separates cases by two linked tests: how strange the sighting remains after known explanations have been considered, and how consistent or well-supported the file is. Since 2008, GEIPAN has used the A, B, C, D1 and D2 framework. A means almost certainly identified, B means probably identified, C means not workable because the reliable data are lacking, and D1 or D2 means unexplained after investigation, with D2 reserved for the stronger end of the scale.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frGEIPANMission & Geipan | GEIPANGEIPANMission & Geipan | GEIPAN

That matters in Nord because a case can feel extraordinary to a witness and still end up in a modest official category. A single orange light can be emotionally memorable, but if wind, timing, appearance and movement fit sky lanterns, GEIPAN may class it as B. A brief report with no images, no independent witnesses and uncertain direction may become C, not because officials think “nothing happened”, but because the file cannot be tested properly. Conversely, a case can remain unresolved without becoming spectacular: D1 means that the best conventional hypotheses did not satisfy the investigation, not that an exotic explanation has been established.

GEIPAN’s own methodological notes warn that human testimony is fragile. Witnesses may misjudge distance, speed and height, especially at night, and emotion can increase the perceived strangeness of an event. The unit also stresses that the border between explained and unexplained cases can turn on a few decisive details. That is exactly what the Nord files illustrate: one photograph, one wind record, one missing corroborating witness, or one late report can change the classification.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frGEIPANMission & Geipan | GEIPANGEIPANMission & Geipan | GEIPANGEIPAN Files illustration 1

Lille 1997 and the stronger unresolved record

Lille’s 6 June 1997 file is one of Nord’s important official unresolved cases because it is not merely a vague local rumour. GEIPAN lists it in Nord with classification D, updated in 2021, and describes the case type as a strange to very strange phenomenon with medium to strong consistency. The available testimony pages record two witnesses at about 23:00, reporting two spherical objects in the sky, with no noise and no stated environmental effect. One witness described white objects, four times smaller than the Moon in apparent size, moving rapidly; the second witness also described two small spherical objects.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The Lille file is useful because it shows what “unexplained” can mean in official practice. The witnesses reported a concise, sky-based observation rather than a sprawling story with many dramatic add-ons. The file is stronger than a bare anecdote because there are two testimony records, a precise date and time, and a formal GEIPAN classification. At the same time, the public summary does not provide photographs, radar data or a physical trace. That keeps the case in a careful middle ground: stronger than an untestable report, but not a decisive evidential landmark.

This is where Nord’s official record differs from its folklore. The famous 1954 Quarouble story belongs to the department’s wider UFO history, but GEIPAN’s modern files ask a narrower question: after the report is anonymised, checked and compared with ordinary explanations, what remains? Lille 1997 remains interesting because GEIPAN did not publish a probable mundane explanation. It does not, however, license a leap from “unidentified” to “extraordinary vehicle”. The file’s value is evidential rather than sensational.

Douai’s 27 March 2022 case is another important modern example. GEIPAN classed it as D1, with strangeness 0.65 and consistency 0.72, after a report of a silent triangular phenomenon with coloured lights moving in a straight path for around 10 to 20 seconds. The investigation considered aircraft and drone possibilities, including a drone near the prison area, but noted problems: the described triangular form did not match known civil drone models, the estimated size would imply a large and likely audible machine at close range, and enquiries did not identify an operator matching the report.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Douai 2022 is especially helpful for readers because it shows unresolved does not mean unexamined. GEIPAN did not simply accept the witness’s impression. It tested aircraft, drone, distance, sound, lighting and regulatory issues, then still judged the case unidentified. The result is a good example of the line between a weak mystery and a more serious unresolved file: not because it proves something exotic, but because ordinary explanations were actively explored and found wanting.

Lanterns, lights and aircraft: why many Nord files become explainable

Many Nord cases fall on the explainable side because the department offers ideal conditions for visual misidentification. It is densely populated, full of roads, towns, event venues, air traffic and local light sources. In such a setting, the witness may be honest and attentive while still seeing a familiar source under unfamiliar conditions.

The lantern cases are the clearest pattern. At Coudekerque on 21 April 2011, several people reported silent waves of orange lights. GEIPAN classified the case B, noting that the witness photographs resembled many other cases later attributed to Chinese-style lanterns and that changing winds could account for the reported trajectory.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr. At Curgies on 17 February 2013, two witnesses in a vehicle saw red lights aligned and apparently stationary; GEIPAN again classed the file B, judging sky lanterns probable because the description, weekend timing and light easterly wind fitted lanterns moving away from the observers.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Wavrechain-sous-Denain on 27 December 2015 is a compact example of how a “probable” explanation is built. A witness saw two silent circular white forms, one with a brief red point, moving across a clear sky for less than 10 seconds. GEIPAN classed the case B, because the paired forms, wind direction recorded at Lille and Cambrai, and plausible uncertainty in height, duration and speed all fitted Thai lanterns well enough, even though no separate lantern release was formally confirmed.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Advertising and event lighting form a second pattern. Merville’s 31 March 2008 case involved people at an aerodrome seeing white luminous rings moving in the sky without sound. GEIPAN classed it B as a probable light animation, noting a local witness’s statement that advertising laser projectors were frequently used in the area by restaurants or night-time venues.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr. Quiévy’s 3 September 2024 file is a newer and more detailed version of the same logic: a witness saw a large round white patch moving rapidly across a cloudy sky, stopping briefly and moving again. GEIPAN classed it B, with strangeness 0.30 and consistency 0.56, as a probable sky-tracer or laser effect projected onto cloud.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The Quiévy file is valuable because it explains a common witness mistake without belittling the witness. The person thought the source was above the clouds and rejected the projector idea. GEIPAN’s explanation is that a powerful beam can create a diffuse bright patch on cloud while the beam itself remains invisible, making the light appear to move in the sky rather than on the underside of the cloud layer. That is exactly the sort of perceptual trap that produces a sincere “UFO” report from an ordinary source.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Aircraft produce another kind of false mystery. At Thun-Saint-Amand on 3 December 2016, two witnesses reported multiple bright rectangular or oval phenomena near sunset, took photographs, and described later shapes including a disputed sphere. GEIPAN classed the case A as misidentification of different aircraft observed around sunset, because the photos allowed detailed comparison with air traffic records. The remaining “sphere” element was treated cautiously because it was not seen by the second witness and did not appear in the photos.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.GEIPAN Files illustration 2

Weak evidence is not the same as a strong mystery

Some Nord files are important precisely because they show what GEIPAN does not claim. Older C cases such as Jeumont 1979 and Valenciennes 1979 appear in GEIPAN’s case search as “lack of reliable information”. That is not the same as a strong unexplained case. It means the official record does not contain enough dependable material to decide between explanations.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

This distinction is easy to miss in popular UFO writing. A thin file can sound more mysterious than a better-investigated case because fewer details are available to challenge the story. But in GEIPAN’s method, missing data weakens a case. Without a precise time, direction, weather context, duration, independent witnesses, images, local checks or an immediate report, the official conclusion cannot responsibly become “unexplained after investigation”. It becomes “not workable”.

Nord’s record therefore contains three different kinds of uncertainty. One is ordinary uncertainty inside a probable explanation, as with lanterns or lasers where no exact operator or release is identified but the fit is good. Another is evidential uncertainty, where the file is too weak to test. The third is residual uncertainty after investigation, as in Lille 1997, Ledringhem 2011 and Douai 2022. Those three should not be flattened into the same bucket.

Ledringhem’s 17 April 2011 case shows this middle territory well. A witness reported hearing a dull turbine-like noise and seeing a black cylindrical object pass very low over a house roof at high speed. GEIPAN classed it D1, noting that an investigator found no coherent hypothesis, although the object resembled a drone of an unknown model. The same summary also warns of the file’s limits: single witness, very brief observation, no photo or video, and performance not very far from known machines.[GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

That is a sober official unresolved case. It resists a neat explanation, but it also resists overclaiming. The file’s value is that it shows GEIPAN’s boundary line in practice: a case can be non-identified while still being modest, fragile and open to future reinterpretation.

What Nord’s official files really show

Nord’s GEIPAN archive does not support a simple sceptical dismissal or a simple mystery narrative. It shows a sorting process. Many reports are explainable because their details match lanterns, event lighting, aircraft, stars, balloons or photographic artefacts. Some are weak because the data do not allow a serious reconstruction. A smaller number remain unresolved because the ordinary hypotheses do not fit well enough after checks.

The strongest lesson is that classification depends on evidence quality, not just witness sincerity. Lille 1997 matters because it is officially unresolved and has more than one testimony. Douai 2022 matters because it received a modern investigation with explicit testing of drone and aircraft scenarios. Ledringhem 2011 matters because it shows a D1 file can be intriguing while still limited. Coudekerque, Curgies, Wavrechain-sous-Denain, Merville, Quiévy and Thun-Saint-Amand matter for the opposite reason: they show how strange-looking lights become less strange when weather, photographs, local lighting, traffic records and known visual effects are brought into the file.[GEIPAN+5GEIPAN+5GEIPAN]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

For a reader exploring Nord’s UFO history, GEIPAN’s files are most useful when read as an evidence map. They do not replace older local stories, press archives or witness traditions, but they do discipline them. They ask whether a report has enough reliable detail to be tested, whether known phenomena explain the full strangeness of the sighting, and whether the unresolved residue is strong or merely incomplete. In Nord, that line is the story: not a catalogue of wonders, but a public record of how unusual sky reports move from surprise to explanation, uncertainty or genuine official non-identification.GEIPAN Files illustration 3

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to What Nord's Official UFO Files Really Show.
