Introduction
Bas-Rhin’s UFO record is strongly shaped by ordinary aviation and optical misidentification. The department contains Strasbourg-Entzheim airport, busy approach paths across the Rhine plain, and the former Drachenbronn air-surveillance complex, while GEIPAN’s local files show several cases where apparently strange lights were later matched to aircraft, military refuelling, dashboard reflections, balloons, planets or rocket debris. The useful lesson is not that every Bas-Rhin report is trivial. It is that the best local investigations often turn on reconstruction: where the witness stood, what direction they faced, whether they were in a moving car, whether glass or a camera lens distorted the view, and whether flight or radar data match the timing. In the independent GEIPAN-derived Bas-Rhin listing, 45 cases are recorded: 12 class A, 21 class B, 11 class C and only one class D unexplained case.[CarteOvni.fr]carteovni.frCarte Ovni.fr OVN I dans le Bas-Rhin (67) — Carte Ovni.frCarte Ovni.fr OVN I dans le Bas-Rhin (67) — Carte Ovni.fr
Why aircraft explanations matter so much in Bas-Rhin
Bas-Rhin is not an empty-sky department. Strasbourg-Entzheim sits at Entzheim, west-south-west of Strasbourg, with a single 05/23 runway and regular civil traffic; airport live information also shows how mixed the traffic can be, from domestic French routes to Mediterranean and European destinations.[Wikipedia]WikipediaStrasbourg AirportStrasbourg Airport That matters because a low, bright, slow-looking aircraft can become difficult to recognise when it is seen for only a few seconds, from a moving car, at dusk, or without a clear horizon reference.
The strongest local example is the 19 April 2019 case between Gresswiller and Mollkirch. A driver and passengers saw what seemed to be an enormous stationary craft near treetops, roughly seven kilometres away. GEIPAN classified it as A, identifying it as a Boeing 737 on approach to Strasbourg. The case is valuable because it shows two recurring traps at once: distance was hard to judge, and the witnesses’ own movement in the car helped create an apparent “pivot effect”, making the aircraft seem almost fixed against the landscape. GEIPAN also noted that the aircraft was in landing phase and moving more slowly than at cruise speed, which strengthened the illusion.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
A similar pattern appears in the 9 May 2018 Haguenau case. A witness at a rugby ground photographed a bright cylindrical “ball” and a dark object, with no sound heard. GEIPAN’s reconstruction found that the bright object matched an airliner moving from north-east to south-west, and that the aircraft’s fuselage reflected the Sun while the wings were not obvious. The dark objects were assessed as likely dirt or marks on the camera lens. This is a classic Bas-Rhin misidentification pattern: a photographed “cigar” or luminous cylinder may not be exotic at all, especially when only the fuselage catches sunlight.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
Strasbourg-Entzheim makes some sightings look stranger than they are
Airport context does not explain every report, but it changes how a reader should assess low lights, silent shapes and apparent hovering in the Strasbourg area. Aircraft approaching or leaving an airport can appear slow, almost motionless or oddly bright depending on angle. Landing lights can face a witness directly; fuselage reflection can hide wings; navigation lights can look like separate objects; and approach paths can produce the impression that a light is hanging over a fixed point.
Drachenbronn explains the surveillance setting, not every UFO claim
Drachenbronn has a special place in Bas-Rhin’s sky history because it was not a flying base in the ordinary sense. It was a radar and control site, built into the former Hochwald Maginot Line complex near Drachenbronn-Birlenbach, with a mission of air-surveillance over eastern or north-eastern France. Public descriptions of the former BA 901 stress that it housed the Centre de détection et de contrôle 05/901 and that a three-dimensional radar on the Hochwald heights dominated the Alsace plain and Rhine valley.[Wikipedia]WikipediaDrachenbronn Air BaseDrachenbronn Air Base
This background matters because it can tempt readers to overstate the radar angle. A department with a famous radar site is not automatically a department with radar-confirmed UFOs. In practice, the Bas-Rhin files that best illustrate radar’s value are not dramatic unknowns but solved cases: radar or flight data helped investigators connect odd visual reports to ordinary aircraft or military activity.
The 17 September 2025 Marlenheim case is the clearest example. A witness reported a large aircraft accompanied by smaller circular objects, then a second similar event. GEIPAN’s account says CAPCODA radar reconstruction showed an A330 MRTT tanker involved in in-flight refuelling with fighter aircraft. The fighter aircraft appeared as smaller “objects”, and the manoeuvre explained the witness’s impression of companions moving with, then turning away from, the larger aircraft. GEIPAN classified the case A, as military aircraft.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
This is a useful corrective to a common UFO-reading mistake. Radar information does not only “confirm mysteries”; often it removes them. In Marlenheim, the oddity came from the witness’s correct perception that several things were flying together, but the interpretation changed once their scale, altitude and military refuelling pattern were reconstructed.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
Rocket debris shows how a national event can enter local memory
Bas-Rhin’s airport and radar setting is only part of the story. Some local “UFO” impressions came from far above normal aviation altitude. The major French example is the evening of 5 November 1990, when more than a thousand witnesses across France saw a large luminous phenomenon crossing a clear sky. GEIPAN’s later simulation describes it as the atmospheric re-entry of debris from the third stage of a Soviet Proton rocket, travelling at roughly 90 to 50 kilometres altitude and slowing from about 7 to 2 kilometres per second.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frsimulation rentree atmospherique 1990simulation rentree atmospherique 1990
Recent solved cases show three repeating failure modes
Bas-Rhin’s solved files are not all the same. They show several distinct ways ordinary lights become UFO reports.
The aircraft that looks stationary. In the Gresswiller-Mollkirch case, a Boeing 737 on approach seemed huge and almost fixed above the landscape. GEIPAN explained this through the short duration of the observation, the aircraft’s approach speed, the witnesses’ movement in a car, and the “pivot effect” against the scenery.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
The aircraft that loses its wings. In Haguenau, a photographed bright cylinder was identified as an airliner. GEIPAN’s explanation is practical: if sunlight reflects from the fuselage but not the wings, the aircraft may look like a wingless cigar or luminous capsule, especially when zoomed or seen at a distance.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
The cockpit, windscreen or camera that creates a false object. The Fouchy-Urbeis driver’s sighting was traced to a dashboard reflection, while the Haguenau dark “objects” were assessed as lens dirt. These cases are important because photographs do not automatically strengthen a report. A photograph may also reveal the mundane source, especially when investigators can compare geometry, reflections and camera artefacts.[Geipan]geipan.frOpen source on geipan.fr.
What radar and flight data can and cannot prove
Radar, flight trackers and official air-operation data are powerful in Bas-Rhin investigations, but they are not magic. They can match time, direction, altitude and movement. They can show that a reported light coincided with a known airliner, a military tanker, fighters, or an approach path into Strasbourg. They can also expose when a witness’s estimate of size or distance is physically unlikely.
How this changes the reading of Bas-Rhin UFO history
The airport, radar and misidentification pattern makes Bas-Rhin’s UFO history more disciplined, not less interesting. The department’s record is not just a list of lights; it is a set of tests for how ordinary aerial activity becomes extraordinary testimony. Strasbourg-Entzheim supplies plausible aircraft candidates. Drachenbronn explains the region’s long air-surveillance culture. GEIPAN’s case files show how photographs, road geometry, windscreens, radar reconstructions and flight paths can turn a puzzling report into a specific explanation.
This also sharpens the contrast with Bas-Rhin’s genuinely harder files. If many reports can be resolved through aircraft, reflections, balloons, Venus or rocket debris, then the remaining unresolved case at Sélestat in 1994 should not be treated as just another vague light in the sky. It stands out precisely because so much of the surrounding department record is explainable or weakly documented. CarteOvni’s Bas-Rhin summary lists only one class D case out of 45 GEIPAN cases, while GEIPAN’s own classification system reserves D for phenomena not identified after investigation.[CarteOvni.fr]carteovni.frCarte Ovni.fr OVN I dans le Bas-Rhin (67) — Carte Ovni.frCarte Ovni.fr OVN I dans le Bas-Rhin (67) — Carte Ovni.fr
For readers, the practical takeaway is simple: in Bas-Rhin, the first questions should usually be aviation and optics questions. Was the witness near an approach path? Was the object seen through a windscreen? Was the witness moving? Was the Sun or Moon reflecting off a fuselage? Was there military activity, refuelling, or a known re-entry? Only after those possibilities are tested does a report become a stronger candidate for the department’s unresolved UFO history.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to How Ordinary Lights Became Bas Rhin UFO Reports.
