Were Perpignan's Formation Lights Really Birds?
Several Perpignan reports of silent formation lights were probably birds made luminous by urban lighting and migration routes.

Introduction
Why V-shapes and straight lines suggest a craft
A V formation is one of the most persuasive shapes in a night-sky sighting because it looks intentional. A row of evenly spaced points moving together can seem less like separate objects and more like lights mounted on a large silent craft. That impression is not irrational: human vision naturally groups things that move together, a principle often described in perception research as “common fate”. In simple terms, if several lights travel in the same direction at the same speed, the brain tends to organise them as one pattern rather than many separate bodies.[PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPMCA Century of Gestalt Psychology in Visual Perception IPMCA Century of Gestalt Psychology in Visual Perception I
The 2020 Perpignan sighting had several features that could create that impression. The witness described white circular lights, grouped in a V, moving silently and horizontally for about two minutes before disappearing with distance. The lights were also said to move somewhat irregularly, a detail that actually fits a flock better than a rigid object, but which may be easy to miss during a brief, surprising observation.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
Bird flight adds a second layer to the illusion because V formations are not random. Large birds often fly in organised formations during migration because formation flight can reduce the energetic cost of travel; research on migratory birds has shown that coordinated V flight is linked to aerodynamic advantage and flock efficiency.[Nature]nature.comOpen source on nature.com. In a daytime birdwatching context, that reads as birds. In the half-light above a city, the same geometry can read as structure, technology, or a silent triangular craft.
This is why “it was in formation” is not, by itself, strong evidence of a machine. Formation is exactly what some birds do. The stronger question is whether the reported size, brightness, motion, timing, direction, local ecology, and lighting conditions fit birds better than aircraft, drones, lanterns, satellites, or an unknown object.
Storks, migration routes, and city light
The most important local detail is not simply that Perpignan has birds nearby. It is that the sighting direction pointed towards one of the department’s major bird corridors. GEIPAN noted that the witness was roughly five kilometres from the Canet-Saint-Nazaire lagoon and looking east or south-east, the same general direction as that ornithological zone. The lagoon is described by the Coastal Conservatory as internationally important for birds because of its position on the Africa-Europe migration axis, with 139 species identified there in 2017.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
Local birding sources reinforce why this matters. The Canet-Saint-Nazaire site is presented on Migraction as a migration watchpoint where white storks are a notable feature, and the site’s description says the white stork is strongly represented there, with some springs recording nearly 2,000 individuals.[Migraction]migraction.netOpen source on migraction.net. The Roussillon Ornithological Group also describes migration monitoring in the department as concentrated at chosen sites that channel large flows of birds, including the Saint-Nazaire hill above the Canet lagoon in spring and the Eyne area in Cerdagne in autumn.[gor66]gor66.frOpen source on gor66.fr.
GEIPAN did not simply guess “birds” from the shape. It contacted an ornithologist, who replied that the observation was probably a flight of white storks at that place and time. The investigator’s message specifically asked whether birds flying in V formation in late July or early August, about an hour before sunrise, could be moving towards the Saint-Nazaire lagoon, and noted the possibility of pale chests reflecting urban lighting.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
How short sightings create single-object impressions
The 2020 sighting lasted about two minutes, long enough to be memorable but too brief for detailed checking. There was no photograph or video, and only one witness report was collected. That does not make the witness unreliable; it means the case depends heavily on reconstruction from time, direction, location, weather, and known local activity. GEIPAN gave the case a consistency score of 0.70 and a very low strangeness score of 0.05, then classified it as an identified bird case.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
Several parts of the report work together:

- Silence: birds would be silent or nearly silent at the observer’s distance; a lack of engine noise does not require an exotic explanation.
- V formation: the reported shape matches migratory flock behaviour rather than contradicting it.
- Irregular movement: the witness’s own description of slight irregularity weakens the idea of lights fixed to a rigid craft.
- Disappearance with distance: fading as the flock moves away is what would be expected if reflected light and viewing angle mattered.
- Direction: the east or south-east line of sight matched the Canet-Saint-Nazaire bird zone rather than a random sky sector.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The case also illustrates why “circular lights” can be misleading. At night, a bird is rarely perceived as a detailed bird shape. What reaches the observer may be only a small patch of brightness: the belly, breast, wing surface, or changing reflection from a moving body. With several birds reflecting light at once, the witness may see a set of soft discs rather than individual animals.
This is where the single-object impression forms. A flock moving together supplies alignment; urban reflection supplies apparent luminosity; distance removes body detail; darkness removes scale; surprise reduces careful tracking. The result can feel like a large object with lights, even when the underlying objects are separate birds.
Why this case weakens rather than strengthens the UFO claim
The Perpignan formation-lights case is interesting precisely because it begins with a classic UFO-like description and ends with a mundane explanation that fits the local facts. The case had no radar trace, no multiple independent witnesses, no image, and no reported manoeuvre beyond silent horizontal movement. Its strongest “UFO” features — V shape, silence, glowing points, and apparent formation — are also features compatible with birds under urban lighting.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.
GEIPAN’s classification system is useful here because it prevents two common mistakes. One mistake is to treat every unexplained-looking sighting as mysterious. The other is to dismiss witnesses as foolish. GEIPAN evaluates both consistency, meaning the amount and reliability of information, and residual strangeness after known explanations have been tested.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr. In this case, the information was sufficient to test a local bird hypothesis, and the remaining strangeness was very low.
That does not mean every formation-light report over Pyrénées-Orientales is automatically birds. The lesson is narrower and more useful: when a sighting occurs near Perpignan, especially towards the coast or Canet-Saint-Nazaire, and involves silent V-shaped lights before dawn or at night, birds should be one of the first explanations checked. The department’s geography makes that check especially important.
What would make a future Perpignan formation case stronger?
A future report would need more than a striking formation to remain genuinely puzzling after investigation. The most useful details would be exact time, viewing direction, elevation angle, duration, weather, wind, the observer’s location, and whether the lights changed spacing relative to each other. A phone image or video could help, but only if it includes landmarks or enough context to reconstruct direction and scale.
The strongest contrary evidence against birds would include a rigid formation maintaining perfect spacing through sharp turns, a documented altitude or speed inconsistent with bird flight, multiple independent observers from separated locations, or instrumented evidence such as radar or high-quality timed imagery. Without those details, a short formation of silent lights near known bird routes remains vulnerable to the same explanation as the 2020 Perpignan case.
Within the wider Pyrénées-Orientales UFO record, this case sits alongside other explained local reports such as military flares, lantern-like lights, satellites, and optical misperceptions. Its value is not that it proves something extraordinary happened. Its value is that it shows how an official investigation can turn a compelling witness description into a specific, testable local explanation: not just “probably birds”, but probably migratory white storks, in the right direction, near a known migration site, reflecting the lights of nearby towns.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to Were Perpignan's Formation Lights Really Birds?.
