Introduction

Pas-de-Calais is a useful department for asking a simple but important UFO-history question: how many local reports still resist explanation once they pass through France’s official archive? The answer is not “many spectacular mysteries”. In the public GEIPAN record, the standout unresolved local case is Longuenesse in September 1990, while a larger body of Pas-de-Calais reports has been classed as explained, probably explained, or too weak to analyse properly. That makes the department valuable less as a parade of famous encounters than as a working example of how official UFO files separate an unexplained case from an ordinary misidentification, a weak file, or a case changed by later review. GEIPAN, the CNES unit responsible for collecting, analysing and publishing reports of unidentified aerospace phenomena, says its national archive is dominated by identified or probably identified cases, with only a small percentage remaining unexplained after investigation.[CNES]cnes.frGEIPAN | CNESGEIPAN | CNESOverview image for GEIPAN Files

What GEIPAN’s categories really mean

GEIPAN’s labels are not a scale from “boring” to “alien”. They are an evidence tool. A case can look strange to a witness and still end up in category A or B if the investigation finds a strong ordinary explanation. Equally, a case can remain outside explanation not because it proves anything extraordinary, but because the information is too incomplete to test properly.

The basic system is A, B, C and D. Category A means the phenomenon is explained without serious ambiguity. Category B means a known explanation is very probable, but not nailed down with the certainty of category A. Category C means the file cannot be properly analysed because the information is missing, unreliable or insufficient. Category D is reserved for cases that remain unexplained after investigation, with D1 and D2 used in some records to indicate levels of strangeness and evidential strength. GEIPAN describes its classification as resting on two linked ideas: residual strangeness after hypotheses are tested, and consistency, meaning the quantity and reliability of the information gathered.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frLa méthodologie de classification au GEIPAN | GEIPANLa méthodologie de classification au GEIPAN | GEIPAN

That distinction matters in Pas-de-Calais because several local cases that might sound dramatic in isolation do not sit in the same evidential category. Calais 1981, for example, was once treated as unexplained, but GEIPAN later re-examined it and classified it as B: a probable aircraft contrail lit by the rising sun. Longuenesse 1990, by contrast, remains classed D, because the official file still does not settle on a satisfactory explanation.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.GEIPAN Files illustration 1

The one case that still carries the most official weight

The strongest unresolved Pas-de-Calais file in GEIPAN’s public record is Longuenesse, dated 8 September 1990. GEIPAN currently lists it as category D, with the phenomenon described as strange to very strange and of medium to strong consistency. The report involved ovoid forms with red and green lights, seen over several days from about 9.30 pm, sometimes moving slowly and sometimes appearing stationary. GEIPAN’s summary says the observations were made by several witnesses and also by a Police Nationale patrol.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Why Calais shows how old mysteries can shrink after review

Calais is the best local example of a case that became less mysterious with time. GEIPAN’s Calais report for 9 January 1981 concerns three witnesses at a retirement home who saw, around 9 am, a yellow-red elongated object moving east to west, apparently very fast and silently, with intermittent cloud cover. GEIPAN notes that this file had previously been classed D under the old name Calais 1981, but was later re-examined with newer investigative experience and tools.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The revised explanation is not exotic. GEIPAN concluded that the object probably had the characteristics of an aircraft contrail at high altitude, illuminated by the rising sun. The reported “cigar”, oval or fiery form, the red-orange-yellow colour, the low angle near the horizon and even the impression that the object was “cut in two” could fit a short contrail seen under dawn lighting and perspective effects. GEIPAN also stressed a limitation: 37 years later it was impossible to identify the exact aircraft, and the testimony was of fairly weak consistency despite involving three witnesses because the witnesses were dependent and gave few quantified details.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

This is one of the most useful lessons in the Pas-de-Calais archive. A change from D to B does not mean the witnesses were foolish or dishonest. It means the interpretive context changed. Investigators later had more experience with a recurring visual trap: aircraft contrails at sunrise or sunset can look like glowing cigar-shaped objects, especially when the aircraft itself is not easily visible. In local UFO history, that makes Calais 1981 a warning against freezing an old classification as though it were permanent.GEIPAN Files illustration 2

What the weak files add, even when they solve little

Category C files are easy to overlook because they are unsatisfying: neither explained nor robustly unexplained. Yet they are important for understanding a department-level UFO record. In Pas-de-Calais, GEIPAN search results list several local category C cases, including Calais 1988, Calais 19 April 1990, Bully-les-Mines 2014, Saint-Nicolas-lez-Arras 2009, Puisieux 2009, Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise 1977 and Vieille-Eglise 1979. These are not “mystery wins”. They are files where the public classification points to missing or unreliable information rather than a strong residual anomaly.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frRecherche de cas | GEIPANRecherche de cas | GEIPAN

For readers, the distinction is crucial. A category C case should not be counted with Longuenesse as though both were equally unexplained. GEIPAN’s own methodology says C means the observation is not usable enough to conclude. In practical terms, that can mean no precise direction, no reliable timing, no usable image, no independent witness, no weather or traffic cross-check, or simply too much delay between the event and the report.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frLa méthodologie de classification au GEIPAN | GEIPANLa méthodologie de classification au GEIPAN | GEIPAN

That is why Pas-de-Calais is a good test case for public interpretation. It contains the whole range: a D case that still deserves attention, C cases that mostly teach caution, and many A or B cases that show how ordinary objects become strange when seen at night, at low angle, at distance, or in poor photographic conditions.

The recurring explanations: aircraft, meteors, lanterns and balloons

A striking feature of the Pas-de-Calais record is how often the same ordinary causes reappear. They are not random debunks added after the fact; in many cases, GEIPAN ties the explanation to a specific pattern in the witness description.

In the Andres-to-Guines case of 21 October 1954, two gendarmes saw a very bright luminous trail moving silently across a clear dark sky for no more than 15 seconds. Although the witnesses rejected a meteor because of the object’s apparent size and horizontal path, GEIPAN classified the case B as the probable passage of a bolide: a natural meteoroid entering and fragmenting in the atmosphere. The example is useful because it shows how witness reasoning can be understandable and still wrong; meteors can appear large, bright, low and nearly horizontal from an observer’s perspective.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Lanterns form another repeated local pattern. In Calais on 12 June 2010, several people saw around ten orange and white luminous balls moving slowly and silently, apparently rising before disappearing. GEIPAN classed the report B and noted a local press account mentioning a possible lantern release near the Lycée du Détroit, though no gendarmerie testimony confirmed that release.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr. In Liévin on 15 May 2016, several witnesses saw yellow-orange luminous balls moving in the same direction with regular spacing and no sound; GEIPAN again classed the case B, saying the colour, shape, trajectory and disappearance pattern were characteristic of a lantern release.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The same pattern appears in Souchez and Béthune. At Souchez in June 2012, a witness filmed a slow, silent line of red lights; GEIPAN found the description, videos, wind direction and event context consistent with lanterns probably released after a party. At Béthune in June 2013, four people saw six silent lights cross the night sky, and GEIPAN considered lanterns likely, though the witness reportedly did not accept that hypothesis.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Balloons and birds complete the picture. Billy-Montigny 2019 was classed B after a photograph and wind analysis led GEIPAN to a probable festive helium balloon, possibly elongated or fish-shaped. Warlus-to-Dainville 2021 was classed A as a Mylar novelty balloon, with apparent manoeuvres explained by changes in reflection as the balloon rotated. Sallaumines 2024, updated in 2025, was classed B after three dark triangular forms seen for only seconds were judged probably to be nocturnal birds lit from below by urban lighting.[cnes-geipan.fr+2cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.GEIPAN Files illustration 3

Photographs and videos do not automatically settle a case

Modern readers often assume that a photo or video should end uncertainty. The Pas-de-Calais files show why that is too simple. Images can help, but they can also introduce artefacts, framing problems and false precision.

The Avion case of 24 September 2012 is a good example. A witness saw white flashes behind a large cloud around 12.45 am and filmed for eight minutes with a small “spy pen” camera. Later, the witness noticed luminous balls on the footage that had not been seen directly. GEIPAN classed the case A: distant lightning before a storm. It also noted that the camera was weak in low light, that the lightning flashes may not have registered properly, and that fixed luminous points in the video were probably urban lights rather than aerial objects.[cnes-geipan.fr]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

How to read Pas-de-Calais without overclaiming

The safest reading of the Pas-de-Calais GEIPAN record is neither credulous nor dismissive. It is a mixed archive. Longuenesse remains the key unresolved local report because it has repeated observations, official attention and a category D status. Calais 1981 is important for the opposite reason: it shows how an old unexplained case can be downgraded when investigators recognise a better ordinary explanation. The lantern, balloon, bird, lightning, bolide and aircraft cases show that many UFO reports are sincere observations of real things under misleading viewing conditions.

That does not make the archive worthless. It makes it more useful. A department-level UFO history is strongest when it separates three things that are often blurred together: genuinely unresolved reports, weak reports that cannot bear much interpretation, and explained reports that still teach us why people saw something unusual. In Pas-de-Calais, the official record suggests that the most interesting question is not “how many aliens were seen?” but “which cases still resist the best available explanation, and which ones only seemed mysterious before the details were checked?”

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to How Many Pas de Calais UFOs Stay Unexplained?.
