Introduction
The Boulaur convent sighting matters because it is one of the strongest-looking Gers UFO files at first glance, yet one of the clearest examples of how a compelling witness report can still fall short of being an unexplained case. At about 5.50 am on 24 March 1984, five Cistercian nuns at Boulaur reported a very bright oval or elongated phenomenon moving silently and rapidly in the eastern sky for around ten minutes. GEIPAN, the French space agency’s public investigation unit for unidentified aerospace phenomena, now classifies the case as C: not identified because the available information is insufficient. What the nuns reported in March 1984
The observation took place at Boulaur, in Gers, then filed under Saramon in older records. According to GEIPAN’s case page, five nuns at a convent followed the movements of a very bright oval phenomenon from about 5.50 am for ten minutes. The gendarmerie record gives the case its human texture. The mother superior, aged 63, said she had stepped out on to a first-floor balcony during a pause in the office. The balcony faced the Gimone valley. She described seeing a very bright object above a nearby farm, oval in shape, around five metres long and two and a half metres wide as perceived by her, without dazzling glare or surrounding rays. The other four sisters were called quickly and gave a broadly consistent joint account. They reported a very bright elongated object in the direction of the Gimone valley, moving left and right, rising and descending, silently, before they stopped watching to return to the office while it was still towards Polastron. Several details help explain why the case remained memorable. It was not a fleeting glimpse by one person. It involved five adult witnesses in a sober setting, with an early official statement. The description also contained features that sound object-like: a shape, apparent size, direction, height, movement, silence, and duration. Why the case looks strong, but not decisive
The strongest part of Boulaur is witness consistency. GEIPAN’s later review explicitly says the case is “consistent” because there were five witnesses, the description was fairly precise, and the sincerity and credibility of the witnesses had not been questioned. That matters because many weak UFO reports collapse immediately through vagueness, delay, contradiction, or lack of basic location and timing. Boulaur has exactly that weakness. The witnesses described an apparent object at a perceived distance and height, but there was no photograph, radar track, physical trace, independent neighbour report, repeated sighting, or confirmed light source. Why GEIPAN classed the case C rather than D
GEIPAN’s classification system is central to understanding the case. Boulaur moved from the older D status to the current C status after re-examination. That change does not mean GEIPAN discovered proof of a skytracer. It means the case no longer looks strong enough to count as a robust unexplained case. The skytracer theory and its limits
GEIPAN’s preferred hypothesis is a skytracer: a powerful promotional or entertainment light projected into the sky, often associated with nightlife, events or advertising. Several parts of the report fit the skytracer idea well. The phenomenon was very bright but not dazzling. It moved rapidly from side to side and up and down. It was seen for about ten minutes. It was observed in a sky that GEIPAN considered likely to have been progressively clouding over, based on archived Toulouse-Blagnac weather data showing reduced visibility during the morning. The timing also supports the hypothesis. The sighting occurred early on a Saturday morning, a plausible moment for lighting connected with a venue closing near dawn. The limitation is just as important: GEIPAN could not identify the actual light. The review says no useful verification with discos from the time was possible, partly because decades had passed. The lighting explanation changes the case because it shifts the problem from “what kind of object flew over Boulaur?” to “what kind of light could create the appearance of an object?” That is a major distinction. Boulaur remains the most memorable Gers file because it has both narrative force and investigative restraint. The setting is striking: a convent balcony before dawn, five nuns, an oval light over the Gimone valley, a gendarmerie statement, and an original official classification as unexplained. But the later file does not leave the reader with a simple mystery.
