That does not mean witnesses “saw nothing”. It means the department’s UFO history is mainly a record of perception under imperfect conditions: rural night skies, long distances, bright points of light, aircraft routes, festive lanterns, and increasingly satellites and rocket stages. What the official Gers record actually shows

France is unusual because UFO-style reports can enter an official national system. GEIPAN, a unit of the French space agency CNES, was created in its current form after earlier CNES bodies and is tasked with collecting, analysing, archiving and publishing reports of unidentified aerospace phenomena. CNES says GEIPAN works with partners including the gendarmerie, police, the French Air and Space Force, CNRS and Météo-France, and its broad national figures show that most cases are either identified or probably identified, while only a small share remain unidentified after investigation.[CNES]cnes.frOpen source on cnes.fr.

GEIPAN’s classification is crucial for reading Gers sensibly. Class A means a phenomenon has been perfectly identified after investigation; class B means it has probably been identified; class C means it is not identified because the data are insufficient; and class D means it remains unidentified after investigation. That distinction matters because Gers has several class C cases. A class C label is not a stronger mystery than class B; often it is weaker. It usually means GEIPAN cannot responsibly close the case because there is too little reliable information, not because the case has resisted a strong investigation.

The Boulaur convent case: the most memorable Gers file

The most striking older Gers case is Boulaur, formerly associated with Saramon. On 24 March 1984, from about 5.50 am, five Cistercian nuns at a convent observed a bright oval phenomenon moving rapidly in the morning sky. GEIPAN’s public page describes a ten-minute observation of a very bright elongated object moving silently from side to side and up and down in cloudy conditions. This case is interesting because it has features that often make UFO reports feel compelling: multiple witnesses, a coherent setting, a clear duration, and no obvious suggestion that the witnesses were insincere. GEIPAN explicitly states that the sincerity and credibility of the witnesses were not questioned. Yet the later re-examination also pointed towards a mundane possibility: a skytracer or promotional light reflecting on clouds. The weakness is that the explanation could not be verified decades later. GEIPAN’s review notes that no useful check with local discos from 1984 was possible, and no neighbour or repeat observation supplied the missing corroboration. The 1970s files: red lights, gas flares and missing detail

The Gers record reaches back into the 1970s, but the older files are generally thin. At Miramont-d’Astarac, a single witness reported two red conical or ball-like lights around 2 am on 19 May 1976. No ground traces were found around the witness’s home, and GEIPAN classed the case C because of insufficient information.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

That same period also shows how dramatic impressions can collapse into a local industrial explanation. In the Estang / Le Houga case of 8 October 1977, a driver and passenger were startled by a luminous object that seemed to pass over their vehicle and land in a field, with two flame-like outlets illuminating the horizon. Together, these older Gers cases show both sides of the archive. Some reports remain open only because the information is too sparse; others initially sound extraordinary but are later tied to ordinary local infrastructure. For the department’s UFO history, that is more useful than a simple “mystery” label: it shows why field checks, location, wind, terrain and industrial sites matter.

The 1990s: aircraft and disco lights, not a major UFO flap

Gers does not appear, from the public GEIPAN record, to have had a classic mass “flap” comparable to better-known regional waves elsewhere in France. The 1990s entries instead look like isolated reports later judged to be probable identifications.

2010–2015: why class C often means “not enough to work with”

The early 2010s produced several Gers reports that were not solved, but the reason was usually lack of usable evidence rather than high strangeness. At Lahas on 20 January 2010, a witness reported a fast-moving white light around 10.30 pm, with no sound. GEIPAN noted that the questionnaire was too brief, no further gendarmerie statement was supplied despite follow-up, and the case had weak consistency. The following day, on the road from Eauze towards Cazaubon, a witness reported a large dark or grey spherical object in cloudy sky conditions. GEIPAN’s listing records the case as C, again because of insufficient reliable information.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

Marsolan, on New Year’s Day 2015, is especially instructive. Several family members reportedly saw five red and orange luminous spheres moving silently in the night sky. GEIPAN said the sight of orange balls crossing the sky over several minutes on a major celebration night strongly suggested Thai lanterns, probably released nearby after a private party. But wind data from Auch, about 30 km away, did not fully match the observed direction, and the lack of photos or independent witnesses left too much uncertainty. This is one of the most important lessons from Gers: “unidentified for lack of information” is not the same as “unexplainable”. In many local files, GEIPAN can see a likely route to an ordinary explanation but lacks one or two decisive checks.

Recent Gers cases show a shift towards satellites, rockets and imaging artefacts

The newer Gers files are less like old saucer lore and more like a catalogue of modern sky confusions. That is not unique to Gers, but the department gives clear examples.

At Tourdun on 17 April 2018, a witness taking a long-exposure photograph of the sky recorded a trace and associated it with intermittent illumination on the ground. GEIPAN identified the photographed object as an Airbus A321 on the Munich–Lisbon route, using star-field calibration and aircraft trajectory matching. The remaining “strangeness” came partly from the witness’s later interpretation of what had happened around the photograph. At Marciac on 9 February 2022, a motorist reported coloured luminous balls moving west to east on a slightly descending path, followed by a reddish trail. At Montégut on 5 September 2022, a witness photographed a luminous display involving points, a diffuse shape, an “iris” and a spiral or propeller-like form. GEIPAN identified it as the relighting and passivation of the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket connected with a Starlink launch. At Solomiac on 16 August 2022, GEIPAN’s search listing gives a class A identification as Capella, a bright star. The most recent Gers entries reinforce the same pattern: better data usually reduce the mystery.

On the D654 between Terraube and Cologne on 23 November 2023, two people in a vehicle saw a black, roughly round object moving erratically. GEIPAN classed the case A after analysis: an aviation check identified a dark grey military C-17 transport aircraft in the relevant line of sight, while the erratic tiny object was judged to be very close to, or on, the car windscreen.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

At Lias on 19 August 2023, the witness did not directly observe a UFO but later found two unusual sinuous tracks in automated night-sky images from a home system. GEIPAN classed the case B: probably two LED balloons carried by wind at altitude. The case is useful because it shows how modern automated cameras create new kinds of UFO reports: not remembered experiences, but puzzling image data needing metadata, timing and trajectory analysis.[Geipan]cnes-geipan.frOpen source on cnes-geipan.fr.

The Gaujan case of 26 November 2024 is particularly revealing because it was an aviation report. A helicopter pilot flying from Lourdes to Toulouse, with an assistant and medical passengers on board, saw several points of light appear and disappear. The crew checked flight-tracking information, and air traffic control at Blagnac reportedly had no matching radar signal. This case matters because it shows why “no aircraft on radar” is not the same as “no ordinary explanation”. Satellites can create brief, patterned lights that are not local aircraft. In modern Gers, space infrastructure is becoming a more important source of UFO reports than the older imagery of landed craft or close encounters.

How to read Gers UFO claims without over- or under-reacting

A balanced reading of Gers should avoid two opposite mistakes. The first is to treat every witness report as evidence of an exotic craft. The public files do not support that. The second is to treat every witness as foolish. The files do not support that either. Many reports were made by sincere people who saw something genuinely surprising under conditions where human perception is fragile: darkness, distance, motion, cloud, bright points of light, and limited context.

But the better question is “What survived investigation?” On the public record, no Gers case currently stands out as a strong, investigated class D mystery. What would strengthen a future Gers case?

The Gers files show exactly what investigators need and what is often missing. A future report would be much stronger if it included original photographs or video, exact time, precise location, direction of view, angular height, weather, nearby roads or event venues, and quick reporting before memories fade or local checks become impossible. The Boulaur re-examination is the cautionary example: five credible witnesses saw something memorable, but the long delay made it impossible to verify the likely skytracer explanation. For Gers, then, the most honest conclusion is also the most useful. The department has a real UFO history, but not one dominated by confirmed anomalies. It is a history of rural observations, official paperwork, witness sincerity, partial data, and a growing list of modern explanations. The strongest pattern is not alien visitation; it is the changing sky itself, from disco lights and gas flares to Airbus routes, rocket stages and satellite constellations.
